Ice Age Bones in the Dark: Fossil Hunting in Mexico's Caves

In this Dispatches from the Field talk, explorer and speleologist Michael Girard shares a field report from cave expeditions in Mexico that revealed Ice Age fossils hidden deep within flooded passages. What began as a routine survey shifted into a careful, technology-assisted exploration using an underwater ROV to reach places no human could safely enter.

Through images and brief video, Girard reflects on the discoveries, the unease of encountering ancient remains in situ, and what these caves reveal about layered natural history, human presence, and the value of attentive exploration underground.
